Clinical Features

Motor Symptoms

There is usually ascending, symmetric weakness, usually begins in the legs, spreading to a variable extent but frequently involving the arms and often both sides of the face.
The muscles of respiration or deglutition may also be affected.
In most patients muscle weakness progresses for 1-3 weeks, but rapid deterioration with respiratory failure can develop within hours.
Weakness should not progress longer than 4 weeks
There ia complete tendon areflexia.
Examination
The most striking findings on examination are diffuse weakness with widespread loss of reflexes


Ataxia is usually the predominant feature, with a milder element of sensory loss.
